The Gibbs High School project was a major renovation to the existing school encompassing all facets of construction. Gibbs High School is not only a full high school in the Pinellas County School District, but also includes two separate magnet programs for technology and performing arts. A review of the existing buildings on campus revealed that only one of the existing buildings was suitable for reuse and would be retained. All remaining buildings were demolished. The original athletic complex was also undersized and did not include regulation baseball and softball fields.
The new project consisted of an entire new campus on the existing athletic complex attached to the school. This included multiple classroom buildings, a media center, technology labs, a cafeteria, an administration building, a central chilled water plant, an arts/music instruction building, a performing arts theatre and a gymnasium.
The new construction exceeded 325,000 square feet of space and is capable of supporting in excess of 2,400 students. Upon completion of the new buildings, the existing campus was demolished and a new athletic complex was constructed where the original buildings were located. This new athletic complex includes a football field, track, baseball field, softball field, practice field, four tennis courts and two exterior basketball courts.
